History

In 1919 Dr. Pedro Domingo Sanjuán, Professor of Microbiology at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain and researcher at the Municipal Laboratory of Barcelona, Spain founded the Laboratorio Experimental de Terapéutica Inmunógena (LETI) for the development and production of vaccines. Today immunology, preventive medicine and biological products continue to be the main cornerstone of the company, although its scope and its product range have diversified considerably.

Over the years, Laboratorios LETI has demonstrated its innovative and entrepreneurial capacity. It was the first laboratory to produce penicillin in Spain and possibly in Continental Europe. It played a significant role in the creation and development of the first Spanish laboratory to manufacture antibiotics, which for many years remained the number one sales leader in Spain. Laboratorios LETI was the first and only laboratory authorised by the World Health Organization to produce flu vaccines in Spain. It was a pioneer in the production of therapeutic vaccines for allergies. LETI also had a very prominent role in the field of immunoglobulin. It introduced pregnancy tests in Spain, as well as medicated toothpaste and shaving foam, syndets and pH5.5 for skincare and hygiene, amongst other novelties.

Historia de LETI

In the mid-eighties, there was a change in the shareholder base and also in the company´s strategy. Laboratorios LETI began a process of specialisation in order to focus on areas where it could take a leading role, offering innovative and effective products based on its own research.

Laboratorios LETI has been actively involved in national and European research programs, such as EUREKA, the Fifth EU Framework Programme for Research, Plan Farma, Profarma and PROFIT. As a result, it has received the support from, among others, the Industrial Research and Technological Promotion Programs of CDTI (Spanish Government´s Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology).

Laboratorios LETI has subsidiaries in Germany and Portugal and exports to several countries in Europe and Latin America, as well as to the U.S. and South Africa.
